Guided tour of Felix Nussbaum Haus

Meeting point: Museumsquartier (MQ4), Lotter Straße 2, 49078 Osnabrück at 15:20.

The Osnabrück Museumsquartier unites four buildings under the guiding theme of ‘Peace’. The heart of the quarter is the Felix Nussbaum Haus, designed by Daniel Libeskind. It holds the largest international collection of the Osnabrück-born painter. More than any other artist of the first half of the twentieth century, Felix Nussbaum, born in Osnabrück in 1904 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944, captured all his experiences of the decades following the First World War and depicted them in relation to his own circumstances, which he was forced into by the racist ideology of Nazi Germany.

The Felix Nussbaum collection in Osnabrück can trace its roots back to 1970. It owes its existence to the tremendous dedication of Auguste Moses-Nussbaum, the cousin of Felix Nussbaum. She campaigned for an investigation into the whereabouts of the paintings left behind in Brussels and took legal action to ensure their return to their legal owners. She also made sure that an inheritance of 100 paintings came to Osnabrück. Thanks to the hard work of the city of Osnabrück, the collection grew to more than 200 exhibits in the years that followed. Given the significance and extent of the collection, the city of Osnabrück decided to add the Felix Nussbaum-Haus to the Museum of Cultural History.

Kalkriese, site of the Varus Battle

Meeting point: tba (time: ca. 15:15-19:30)

Varus Battle, Hermann Battle or Battle of the Teutoburg Forest – three names for one historical event. In 9 AD, Germanic tribal warriors led by the Cheruscan Arminius defeated three Roman legions. This defeat was devastating for the antique super power.

More than 2,000 years after the battle between Romans and Germanic tribes, Kalkriese is still a special place. Today, the site can look back on almost 30 years of scientific examinations of the Varus Battle, and year after year archaeological research provides new insights into this tragical event.

The exhibition on the Varus Battle makes the history of this unique site vividly tangible and presents an up-to-date overview of the findings from 20 years of multidisciplinary research. It provides fascinating insights into the lives of the Romans and Germanic tribes. Aside from visiting the exhibition, the tour includes a historical introduction and, from the tower, an explanation of the landscape and the park concept.

Following a 90-minute guided tour, you will have another hour to explore the museum and the park.
